In 1995, Owner Kimberly Hess and her husband George literally picked up their house and moved it to their Minnesota farm, just northeast of Fargo. Since 1991 they have participated in the Reinvest in Minnesota (RIM) program, preserving and protecting parts of their farmland with natural wildflowers and prairie grasses. Her “Big Backyard,” as she affectionately calls it, is planted with native seed, gathered from nearby indigenous prairie that has never been turned under.
Prairie Petal customers are the great beneficiaries of this conservation, as the sea of wild flowers and prairie grasses flood the shop in the summer that transform into beautiful dried arrangements in the fall. Kimberly has always loved wildlife and says Prairie Petals was a natural fit for an independent, artistic, and environmentally-conscious career.
The motto that comes to life in the shop is “keep doing something unique.” With wild, classic and exotic flowers and plants, no two arrangements or bouquets or weddings or vases will ever look the same… and that’s just how Kimberly likes it.
